Multiple Teams · Boys Basketball Takes State for Sixth Year in Row

Islander boys’ basketball beat Austin High School 72-44 in the AAA state championship Saturday evening to win a Minnesota state high school record sixth straight championship in a row.

DeLaSalle won with an excellent effort from senior Goanar Mar who led the Islanders in scoring with 28 points and 11 rebounds. The real story was the team defense that stymied a very talented Austin team.

A huge thanks to the DeLaSalle community and fans that came to support the team throughout the year.

Islanders News · Thoughts from the AD

It has been quite a while since the last “Thoughts from the AD,” and for good reason. It has been really busy around the Island. Frankly, that is the way we like it.

History Day has come and gone, for most. 26 group projects and 5 research papers have advanced to the Minnesota State History Day on April 29 at the University of Minnesota. DeLaSalle continues to be a force in History Day, with more students advancing to state at DeLaSalle than any other school in Minnesota.

Our speech team received second in conference, with an eye at a strong placing in a tough section when we get back from spring break. The second place finish is the first team award in a few years for the speech team.

Our girls’ basketball team made a run at state, and a very young team made a huge statement, signalling intent for years to come. The girls, led by second-year coach Tanyscha Scott, lost to eventual state runners-up Winona in the quarterfinals in a really close game, but bounced back to finish strong with a consolation championship, beating Waseca and Grand Rapids in the process.

This was followed by the boys’ basketball team winning the class AAA state championship last Saturday with a huge win 72-44 over a talented Austin team. It was another fun run, making it six state titles in a row for the boys. While it may seem common-place or expected for the Islanders to win, those involved will tell you it is anything but. The coaching staff and players work harder than anyone else in the state. I can say that for certain, watching how the programs works from an insider’s perspective.

Spring sports are in full swing, and we are ready for warm weather on the island. With that being said, the theme for this article is attitude. I have been inspired watching our girls’ basketball team come together towards the end of the season and how hard they fought. The comradery, humbleness, and sheer will of the boys’ basketball team was also a sight to be seen.

I could write a lot on what makes Islanders special in terms of attitude. I could also write a lot on what sort of attitude a coach or moderator is looking for. But I am going to let someone much more accomplished do the talking for me. Coach Geno Auriemma is one of the most prolific basketball coaches ever. He coaches womens’ basketball at UConn, leading them to 9 national titles in the process. Auriemma will go years without experiencing a loss. That’s right, years. UConn is currently on a 110 game winning streak, and NCAA record. Auriemma is also the coach of the womens’ US National team, winning two gold medals and two world championships. So believe me when I say, this is a guy you may want to pay attention to.

Have a wonderful spring break, see you in April!
